The Ombudsman attended aircraft carrier CNS Shandong reception
4 July 2025
At the invitation of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (“PLA”) Hong Kong Garrison, the Ombudsman, Mr Jack Chan, yesterday (3 July) attended a reception aboard the aircraft carrier, the CNS Shandong, hosted by the PLA Navy’s aircraft carrier fleet.
The reception was officiated by prominent dignitaries, including the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (“HKSAR”), the Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (“CPPCC”), officials from the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office and the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and representatives from the PLA. Numerous HKSAR government officials, members of the Executive Council and the Legislative Council, as well as deputies to the National People’s Congress and CPPCC members, were also invited to attend, contributing to a vibrant and spirited atmosphere.
Eight years after the CNS Liaoning’s visit to Hong Kong, our country’s PLA Navy aircraft carrier fleet made its second appearance in the city. Coinciding with the 28th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the Motherland and the 5th anniversary of the promulgation and implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law, the visit holds profound significance. It not only exemplifies our country’s deep affection for the HKSAR, but also highlights the formidable strength of the PLA in safeguarding national sovereignty and security. Ombudsman Chan said that it was an inspiring honour to represent his office aboard this home built aircraft carrier, the CNS Shandong, where he closely observed and personally felt the remarkable progress of national defence and naval development in the new era, and appreciated the powerful message behind the characters “guo an jia hao”, a Chinese phrase meaning “a secure nation ensures thriving families”, which was a sentiment that left a profound impression.
