Ombudsman exchanges experiences with Asian ombudsman institutes to encourage innovation and foster development in ombudsman systems

The Asian Ombudsman Association (“AOA”) held the International Workshop on Effective Ombudsmanship for People’s Livelihood today (10 September).  The Ombudsman, Mr Jack Chan served as one of the guests of honour and co-officiated the opening ceremony of the workshop with Deputy Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and Vice Chairman of the National Commission of Supervision (“NCS”), Mr Fu Kui, the President of AOA, Mr Ejaz Ahmad Qureshi, Chairman of Jiangsu Provincial Commission of Supervision, Mr Zhang Zhong, Director-General of International Cooperation Department of NCS, Mr Cai Wei, the Vice President of AOA, Ms Sabina Aliyeva and the Treasurer of AOA, Mr Zabihollah Khodaeiyan .

 

During the session “Public Oversight and Whistle-blower Protection”, Mr Chan delivered a keynote speech elaborating the supervisory role of the Office of the Ombudsman in the public administration of the HKSAR. He highlighted the Office’s unwavering commitment to the principles of independence, objectivity and impartiality when performing its duties, and its strict adherence to confidentiality in handling and investigating all cases, with the aim of safeguarding the interests of complainants over the past 36 years since establishment.  He also shared insights into the significant results achieved through the implementation of three strategic initiatives over the past year in improving the quality of public administration and delivering tangible benefits to members of the public.

 

During Mr Chan’s participation in the AOA meeting, he engaged in exchanges and discussions with the ombudsmen and representatives from other Asian ombudsman institutions regarding practical experiences and the effectiveness of supervision, with a view to foster collaboration in promoting the continuous development of and encourage innovation in ombudsman systems while telling good stories of Hong Kong and maintaining close connections with the world.
