Ombudsman attends in Beijing commemorative activities of the 80th Anniversary of Victory in War of Resistance

3 September 2025

As a member of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (“HKSAR”) delegation, the Ombudsman, Mr Jack Chan, travelled to Beijing to attend by invitation the commemorative activities of the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War held in Tiananmen Square today (3 September). At this grand occasion, President Xi Jinping, central government leaders, and heads of state and dignitaries from around the world were in attendance to commemorate and honour the shared history of resistance against fascism by the Chinese people and the global community, and to celebrate the motherland’s remarkable contributions to defeating fascism. Our staff also tuned in from the office to watch the live broadcast of the military parade, feeling the awesome power of cutting-edge weaponry and celebrating patriotism.

Speaking at the commemorative rally, President Xi solemnly reflected on the Chinese people’s sacrifices for the nation and vital contributions to safeguarding global peace during the War of Resistance. He emphasised the Chinese people’s steadfast commitment to a path of peaceful development, urging all to stand in solidarity, uphold collective security, and eliminate the root causes of war. As part of the commemorations, a majestic and dignified military parade showcased the motherland’s achievements in defence modernisation, highlighting its commitment to safeguarding sovereignty and formidable strength in upholding global peace.

Mr Chan expressed his gratitude to the Central People’s Government for the invitation. He considered it a great privilege and a grave responsibility to represent his Office at this national event with such historical significance. The President’s speech was profoundly thought-provoking, directing that we should contribute to sustaining social progress and harmonious development by not only remembering but also transforming the collective memory and national spirit into a driving force for enhancing public governance and administrative system. Through the commemorations, Mr Chan gained a deep appreciation of the insights drawn from national history and the determination to pioneer the future, and was greatly inspired after witnessing first-hand the motherland’s steady and resolute strides on the path to modernisation. Mr Chan will also attend the gala night staged at the Great Hall of the People this evening.

Led by the Chief Executive, Mr John Lee, the HKSAR delegation comprises Principal Officials of the Government, representatives from the Judiciary, the Legislative Council, District Councils, patriots who participated in the War of Resistance, veterans and their descendants, and representatives from various sectors of the community.
