At the invitation of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (“PLA”) Hong Kong Garrison, the Ombudsman, Mr Jack Chan, last night (2 July) attended a deck reception of the Nanning Naval Task Group at Ngong Shuen Chau Barracks, where he toured the guided-missile destroyer Nanning and the guided-missile frigate Hengyang to gain a deeper understanding of the latest advances in national defence and military development in the new era.

At the reception, the Deputy Commander of the Southern Theater Command of the PLA, Vice Admiral Wei Wenhui, delivered a speech, while the Chief Executive, Mr John Lee, exchanged souvenirs with senior officers of the Nanning Naval Task Group. Also in attendance were representatives from the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (“HKSAR”), the Office for Safeguarding National Security of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the HKSAR and the PLA Hong Kong Garrison, as well as officials of the HKSAR Government, who all were moved by the PLA’s distinguished development and achievements in the new era.

To celebrate the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the 29th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland, the national navy, following the visit of the aircraft carrier CNS Shandong last year, once again sent advanced naval vessels to Hong Kong. This meaningful initiative showcases to the Hong Kong people the achievements of national defence and military development. Mr Chan said that it was an inspiring honour to represent his Office on board the Nanning and the Hengyang, where he felt firsthand the close bond between the HKSAR and the country, and how Hong Kong people and all our fellow countrymen share in the country’s prosperity and strength.
