More than 100 overseas guests joined the Welcome Dinner of Inaugural International Ombudsman Summit in Hong Kong

The Ombudsman, Mr Jack Chan, today (2 December) hosted a Welcome Dinner for fellow Ombudsmen and senior personnel from international bodies from all around the globe before the International Ombudsman Summit 2024 and the 35th Anniversary Reception of the Office of The Ombudsman, Hong Kong, China.

 

In his speech at the dinner, Ombudsman Chan pointed out that Ombudsmen and institutions worldwide share one overarching mission, that is enhancing the quality of public administration and spreading the spirit of top-notch ombudsmanship.  He said, “This Summit is like a group time travel in a spaceship. Together we’ll explore the brave new worlds of insights and best practices by reflecting on the past and looking to the future.

 

During the dinner, Ombudsman Chan invited the guests to enjoy the magnificent nightscape of the Victoria Harbour and the specially arranged Chinese cuisine while preparing for the Summit to be commenced the following morning. He also encouraged the guests to visit the busy areas and scenic spots of Hong Kong to explore the characteristics of this vibrant and fascinating city.

 

The full-day Summit will take place on the following day (3 December).  With the theme “Ombudsman in a Changing World: Learning from the Past; Preparing for the Future”, the Summit will provide a platform for ombudsmen of different jurisdictions and systems, dispute resolution organisations, professionals and academics from all around the globe to exchange insights and share experiences and best practices. In the evening, the Office will hold the Summit Closing Ceremony, the 35th Anniversary Reception and the Signing Ceremony of Memoranda of Understanding with eight countries and regions.

 

The Summit has received an overwhelming response from ombudsmen and institutions worldwide. Around 140 overseas and Mainland participants from about 40 countries and regions across six continents, including the First Vice-President of the International Ombudsman Institute, the President of the Asian Ombudsman Association, a multitude of ombudsmen and consuls, and senior personnel from international bodies and local organisations such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
